If there was one word that could describe John Lennon, I think it should be R-E-A-L. No matter what you can say about him or what you have heard from others, you have never heard anyone accuse the man of being phony. This is because, in spite of all his human failings like anyone else, he always challenged himself and the entire world to be real. You have to respect a person like that.
The Station Agent's post of Regina Specktor doing Lennon's "Real Love" the other day has been haunting me, and I have realized that it is one of the most beautiful melodies Lennon ever composed.
Here's Lennon accompanying himself on guitar, when the song was still a bit inchoate and has lyrics that eventually were included in the song "Isolation" from his 1970 album John Lennon And The Plastic Ono Band.
Here's Lennon with a piano backing. I believe it's Lennon sitting beside Nicky Hopkins, and they are both playing.
And here is the posthumous Beatles' production. Doesn't it get to you inside?
